About
Energetic. Melodic. Kinetic beats, both electronic and sample-based. Eclectic sound. Strong reggae influence. Intelligent. Catchy hooks. More singing than you'd imagine. Earthy. Unexpected. High-quality raps with extra-clean delivery. A hard working, distinctive artist.
A recovered scientist, Oso Negro makes music of his life and time, embracing the timeless power of lyrical consciousness and hunger for life. "Breachin' kids thoughts, but aiming at the minds of men, finding them fighting tidal strength." –Oso. A twist of reggae, a splash of crooning and the ever-present spirit of live music feed this hungry bear’s desire to mix it up, keep it fun and stimulating.
Oso hit the road a lot over the last decade, participating in several regional tours and playing shows from Seattle to Los Angeles to Austin, Montana, and just about everywhere between. In addition, he's also been getting plenty of radio play in the region, on both terrestrial and internet radio stations in WA, ID, UT, NV, SD, MA, and MS, and has been interviewed multiple times on Boise Community Radio, KRBX 89.9/93.5, as well as on Monster Music 92.7 FM, Twin Falls, ID.
Oso Negro has supported such acts as Shabazz Palaces, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Dilated Peoples, Souls of Mischief, SOJA, the Chicharones, Rehab, Grupo Fantasma, Katchafire, Cunninlynguists, Sage Francis, Homeboy Sandman, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Mickey Avalon, Tribal Seeds, Tonedeff, Abtract Rude, Myka 9, Scarub, Sweatshop Union, K-OS, Ceschi, Anuhea, Seedless, DJ Zeph & Azeem, Astronautalis, Mac Lethal, Shad, Awol One, Pigeon Hole, Sleep of Oldominion, Darktime Sunshine, Ugly Duckling, Ecid, Cecil Otter, B.Dolan, Qwel and Maker, Jackie Chain, and Poppa Grows Funk, among others. In addition, Oso has been part of the Treefort Music Fest (Boise), Alive After 5 Summer Concert Series (Boise), Neon Reverb Music Festival (Las Vegas), Rootdown Fest (Denver), Interchange Fest (Bozeman), Boise Hip-Hop Festival, Boise State University's "Bronco Welcome" Week, H.O.P.E. Fest, Urban Arts Festival (Salt Lake City), Chamberlin Rail Jam (Bozeman) 4 & 20 Blackbird Festival (Weed, CA), and Promenade Music Festival (Boise).
Influenced by the raw imagery of Wu-Tang, harmonies and gaze toward nature of Goodie Mob, mysticism of the Doors, and transcendence of topics by the likes of Aesop Rock, Cage, and El-P, Oso rarely if ever receives outright comparisons to other artists. His emceeing has been described as melodious, musical, and full of fun patterns. Don't forget the strong reggae and electronic undertones in his music, either.

Two Cats: Oso Negro + DJ Surebert, also feat Black Magic Noize & JohnDionne
21+/ 8pm
Oso Negro hits the autum roads with dj Surebert, Nov 6-10. The Two Cats minitour takes the pair from OR to WA, promoting Oso & Weighn Beats' Werebear EP & featuring the debut of Surebert's live beat set. This team of Oso & Surebert will keep crowds bumping with Bert's dj'ing & kinetic production, and Unkie O's energetic live sets.
The Werebear EP by Oso Negro & Weighn (Boise, ID) is a dark and nimble run through rites of adulthood: discovery & independence, choices & consequence, separation from community, and reflection. Weighn's sequenced beats range from spacious and dour to driving and vigorous, but always with overcast tones. Oso's melancholia grows as he travels the arc from wonder to disillusionment, digging deep with lyrics and flows throughout the journey. Werebear features album art by, and a collaboration on "Maniacs" with, underground Bay legend, Z-Man (San Francisco). A funky remix of this collabo by Fresh Kils (Toronto) brings a re-imagined flavor to the track, making it groove in a whole new way from the original.
"...stark and dark...really great laid in the cut approach to each of Weighn Beats compositions and delivers a sinister flow throughout" - DAMN THAT NOISE, Portland, OR
"...an EP that might sound just a little distant at first, but will reward you more with repeat listens, as you pick up on all the interesting and subtle nuances hidden throughout...interesting...their own weird little niche" - SCRATCHED VINYL, Austin, TX
Oso Negro (Oregon/Mississippi) started his emceeing & singing in Mississippi during 2001, with the electro-southern-funk-hip-hop band New Madrid Click, then formed the hip-hop group H-BOMS, and has been making solo moves throughout the western US since 2010. A twist of reggae, a splash of crooning and the ever-present spirit of live music feed this hungry bearʼs desire to mix it up, keep it fun and stimulating. In 2014, he dropped the Unkie O LP, which was included in Radio Boise's "Krush Groove 208"'s top 10 list of the year's releases.

JohnDionne is a Seattle rapper and producer that recently released his debut album Nothing Nice. This 10 track, entirely self-produced album is raw, angry, and brutally honest.
The lyrics are intensely introspective, vulnerable yet hard hitting. The hooks are infectiously jazzy, while the verses are complex, evolving, and layered with clever wordplay that demand a second listen. The production is dark, dirty, gritty, and is balanced by atmospheric and soulful melody. Not to mention it is filled with live instrumentation. The marriage between the two is truly beautiful and impactful. Each track has it's own story to tell.
